Why this Swedish spray is a must-have for moms with kids under 8

The shoe pile by the door. The car seat after a long drive. The backpack that comes home from preschool smelling of… something. Small kids produce a surprising amount of smell, and most of it lives in things you can’t put in the washing machine. Here’s why a water-based spray from Sweden has ended up in so many Swedish hallways.

  1. The shoe pile by the door

Little sneakers, rubber boots, indoor shoes for preschool, the football boots. Kids’ feet sweat just like ours, the shoes are smaller, and most of them can’t go through the washing machine every week. A few sprays inside each shoe in the evening, dry by morning.

  2. The car seat and the stroller

Spilled milk, a forgotten banana, a wet swimsuit on the way home. Car seats and strollers can’t be washed, and the smell settles into the fabric. Spray, let it dry, done. Test on a hidden spot first if the fabric is brightly coloured.

  3. Backpack, lunch bag, gym bag

The preschool backpack with the lunch box that wasn’t emptied on Friday. The gym bag for the Saturday class. Anything with a lining and a zip holds on to smell – and a spray reaches where a wash won’t.

  4. Rain gear, boots and the bike helmet

Rain trousers and rubber boots after a whole autumn. The bike helmet after a whole summer. The ski helmet and mittens after a day in the snow. All things you’d never put in a machine, all things that start to smell.

  5. It goes after the smell, not over it

Most sprays add a scent on top. SmellWell Odor Eliminator is a water-based formula developed in Sweden that uses activated silica particles to absorb and break down the molecules that cause the smell – from sweat, damp, smoke, urine and more. The result is nothing, which is exactly the point.

  6. Free from biocides and alcohol

Water-based and free from biocides and alcohol, so you can use it on the things your kids live in: shoes, car seats, backpacks, helmets, outdoor gear. Spray from about 30 cm, let it dry. Like any cleaning product, keep the bottle out of reach of small children.

  7. One bottle covers the whole hallway

300 g per bottle, a few sprays per item. Shoes, seat, bag, helmet – one bottle by the door and one in the car is the setup most parents end up with. Rated 4.5 out of 5 by 375 customers on smellwell.com.

How to use it

Spray, dry, forget

  1. Hold the bottle about 30 cm from the fabric and spray lightly over the area that smells – the inside of the shoe, the seat, the lining of the bag.
  2. Let it dry. Overnight for shoes; an hour or two for a car seat with the window open.
  3. Bright or delicate fabric? Test on a hidden spot first and let it dry to make sure the colour holds.
Why we made it

It started with one pair of football boots

SmellWell exists because our co-founder Vincent’s daughter played football – and her boots smelled so bad they couldn’t be kept in the house. Our Freshener Inserts fixed the shoes. Odor Eliminator is for everything else: the things you can’t put an insert in and can’t put in a wash.

Quick answers

Can I use it on the car seat and the stroller?

Yes – that’s what it’s for. Spray from about 30 cm and let it dry. On bright or delicate fabrics, test a hidden spot first.

Is it safe to use around children?

It’s water-based and free from biocides and alcohol. Spray when the kids aren’t sitting in the seat or wearing the shoes, let it dry, and keep the bottle out of their reach like any household product.

What about the shoes themselves – is there something that works overnight?

For shoes that get worn every day, our Freshener Inserts do the job while the shoes stand in the hallway. The spray is for everything you can’t put an insert in.

How many sprays per item?

A light spray over the area is enough – a few sprays per shoe, a few more for a seat or a bag.

P.S. You can’t wash a car seat. You can’t wash a bike helmet. You can spray them. Pick your pack →
