ISBOR, the International Society for Breath Odor (Odour) Research, was founded in 1995 by Prof. Daniel van Steenberghe (Leuven University, Belgium) and Prof. Mel Rosenberg (Tel-Aviv University, Israel), following the first ever international conference on bad breath in Herzliya, Israel (1993).

Scientists and researchers from around the world have since joined this organization, which seeks to share and disseminate knowledge on breath odours worldwide.

The society has had seven international meetings:

  • Herzliya – 1993
  • Leuven – 1995
  • Vancouver – 1997
  • Los Angeles – 1999
  • Tokyo – 2001
  • London – 2004
  • Chicago - 2007
  • Dortmund - 2009
The current president of ISBOR is Prof. John Greenman, one of the international leaders in this field, from the Univeristy of the West of England in Bristol. ISBOR has recently partnered with the International Association of Breath Research (IABR), and together have launced a new scientific journal, The Journal of Breath Research, under the auspices of the IOP. Chief editors are Prof. Anton Amann (Innsbruck) and Prof Mel Rosenberg (Tel Aviv).
The next ISBOR will be held jointly with IABR in 2009, in Dortmund, Germany.
